I'm working on a new client's web page. He's in construction, and likes the navigation on this page:

http://www.thehomeimprovementexperts.com/

He likes the ovals and the rollover effect, so I'll be creating some like this for his menus. I want compliant code. I have Pop Menu Magic and could do something using that, I suppose.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Would you use Pop Menu Magic for this project?

I've never used Pop Menu Magic is it similar to Go Live's menu machine?
And is it proprietary like menu machine?

Hey Everyone,

I have a USA map that I am trying to use hot spots on for links, I am
using Dreamweaver8 to attempt this. I need to see if there is a way to
remove the ugly IE dotted lines that show during and after you click
on a hot spot. I thought there was an extension that cleaned up IE's
messes like this, but I can't find it or any help on google.

Anyone know how to remove these lines, or know of a different way to
make a map of the US clickable --- without using flash?

Thanks all!

[ADW] Object tag and IE borders wont go away

Hello,

I have an area on a web page were I am using the object tag to pull in
an interactive image within an separate html page. Works great in FF,
trashed in IE where I get a border and scroll bars showing.

I tried putting the object within a div and tried using CSS to remove
this, but for all I know this was even silly to try. Still no success.

Anyone know how to make the border and scroll bars disappear in IE? I
tried an iFrame, it worked...kind of, but I still had some issues
using it.

Any suggestions!

Thanks all!

RE: [ADW] Linking a Forms Data to an Excel file

Hi Stephanie,

It sounds like linking the forms data to a database instead of an Excel
spreadsheet would be the better way to go. Would you have any suggestions
for the easiest way to link the form to a database? The form they have is
currently using formmail.asp to process the forms data to an e-mail address.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John

You'll probably need to write your own code. Microsoft has an example
[1] for reading/writing to an excel file using ADO, but there are
limitations, namely you can't have concurrent connections writing to the
excel file. This is less than optimal IMO. I have an application that
reads data from a user-uploaded excel file using ADO which writes to a
database.

How is this excel file going to be accessed? If your users are going to
click on a link to grab it, you would be better off writing the form
data to a database table and then grabbing the contents and outputting
in an excel-like format when the user clicks a link. It is pretty easy
to output what will work as an excel file -- make sure you have response
buffering enabled and then output the data as an HTML table, but set the
response headers to say it is an excel file. You get a warning about
unexpected file format from Excel 2007, but older versions just open the
file without comment.

--- example ---
Response.Clear()
Response.AddHeader "content-disposition",
"attachment;filename=TACoursePrefs.xls"
Response.ContentType = "application/vnd.xls"
Response.Write("<table border=""1"">")
outputHeader rsHead, colCount, outputToExcel
outputBody rsBody, colCount, outputToExcel
Response.Write("</table>")
--- end example ---

This is code I lifted from a report output page. The outputHeader and
outputBody are functions (which I wrote) which output the header row and
body rows respectively -- parameters should be somewhat self-explanatory.

I haven't found any better *free* method to create excel files on IIS
using asp but that doesn't mean they don't exist. There are quite a few
PHP-based excel writers, but I have had little to no success running
them from an IIS server.

Hi Karen

From the css code you just provided it would appear that you do
indeed have a footer with the #ID "footer". However you may have been
just trying to incorporate what I said before. It is very possible
there are other issues. Please make sure the file are uploaded and
provide a link to the page in question and I'll take another look.

Re: [ADW] Variations of contact form boxes with browsers

There's a lot you can do with CSS to control the appearance of the form controls. In particular, play around with the border property on the inputs.

[ADW] CSS Issue

Team,

I am trying to make this work in the div tags.

The navigation section (Quarterback, Running Back, Wide Receiver, Tight End,
Kicker, Defense)

The only one that is linked is Quarterback.

The issue is when you roll over it, it becomes white.

I am trying to make it so it is #000000 or #336633.

I thought by making a div around it. I would work.

The color is correct when you roll over it. But, it isn't when you are not
rolling over it.

The page is here.

http://www.theufl.com/2003/reports/salary_cap_values/2003salaries.htm

The code is here:

http://paste.css-standards.org/33880

The CSS I am working on is about half way down.

It is inside the div tags.

Can, anyone help me with this.

I have been struggling for a couple of weeks.

I was trying to get it to work like these reports were you see the weekly
link reports in the middle above the table of stats.

http://www.theufl.com/2003/reports/standings/week1.html

I tried to write as the same their but it did not work, so I thought I would
convert it to div tag and try that on the salaries report page.

However, I am still unable to fix it. Going, crazy, and I do not want to
move on, until I get it right.

I know, the coding I have is not the best of pratice right now.

But, with a extension, it is hard to keep the code all in one file.

Please, send any advice. So, I can rest! :-)

Thanks for your help, email directly if you want.

[ADW] Re: is it possible to have the footer links different than content links

I don't have a #ID on my footer. I am pretty new at this stuff.

This is what I have for my footer now:

#outerWrapper #footer {
background-color: #D80000;
border-top: solid 1px #8e9fd0; /* Sets the top border properties
for an element using shorthand notation */
padding: 5px 5px 5px 5px; /* Sets the padding properties for an
element using shorthand notation (top, right, bottom, left) */

I have tried adding this to it:

/* Sets the style for unvisited links. */
#footer a:link {
color: #ffffff;
font-weight: bold;
text-decoration: underline;
}
/* Sets the style for visited links. */
#footer a:visited {
color: #ffffff;
font-weight: bold;
text-decoration: none;
}
/* Sets the style for links on mouseover. */
#footer a:hover {
color: #000000;
text-decoration: underline;
}
/* Sets the style for a link that has focus. */
#footer a:focus {
color: #000000;
}
/* Sets the style for a link that is being activated/clicked. */
#footer a:active {
color: #ffffff;
}

But that changed all the links to the whole site. That doesn't work
for me because the content background is white.

Can you explain exactly what I need to do?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Karen

Re: [ADW] is it possible to have the footer links different than content links

Assuming you have a footer with an #ID of "footer just duplicate the
code you have and set it up like this:

#footer a:link{

}
etc

and make sure it comes after the code for the black links

I need to make the links in the footer a different color that the
links on the rest of the site. Is this possible? How do I do this. I

[ADW] Looking for some help on a directory site

I've taken on a project to design a "directory" type website.
Ideally, this page will emulate a Yellow Pages directory where visitors
can click on a letter to view categories, then click on the business
listed. I know that this will seem like a pretty basic subject, I just
haven't seen anything out there that I like to get an idea of the

look???

--- example ---
Response.Clear()
Response.AddHeader "content-disposition",
"attachment;filename=TACoursePrefs.xls"
Response.ContentType = "application/vnd.xls"
Response.Write("<table border=""1"">")
outputHeader rsHead, colCount, outputToExcel
outputBody rsBody, colCount, outputToExcel
Response.Write("</table>")
--- end example ---

This is code I lifted from a report output page. The outputHeader and
outputBody are functions (which I wrote) which output the header row and
body rows respectively -- parameters should be somewhat self-explanatory.

I haven't found any better *free* method to create excel files on IIS
using asp but that doesn't mean they don't exist. There are quite a few
PHP-based excel writers, but I have had little to no success running
them from an IIS server.

[ADW] Linking a Forms Data to an Excel file

Hi Everyone,
I am kinda stumped. I have an online form that I need to have it send
its data to an Excel spreadsheet. The form is currently using a
formmail.asp script to process the data.
Can anyone advise me how I can do that?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
John

Are you meaning that you like the scrolling effect? Place your content
in a div with a set height and width, and set it to a CSS style of
overflow: auto. If it's being able to include content from other pages
that interests you, have a look at server-side includes (SSIs), or
just includes (in ASP.net, PHP). They're quite powerful.

> I know my old version of DW wouldn't even render them in wysiwyg -- so

I know that overflow divs, SSIs, and PHP includes show up in DW8;
that's about all I know.

> I'm not considering flash because I'm looking for html/xhtml code that

Well, you wouldn't want Flash anyway because it's a waste of loading
time and they're difficult to make accessible for those who have
vision disabilities, but you can make Flash animations pass W3C markup
validation. This code seems to work for me:

<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="/swf/movie.swf"
width="300" height="250">
<param name="movie" value="/swf/movie.swf" />
<a href="http://www.adobe.com/go/flashplayer">Click here</a> to
download Flash Player!
</object>

Hope this helps.

[ADW] better than iframe?

occasionally I will want to create a page that uses some sort of
inline frame (a small box with scrolling info) but I really don't like
the way iframes look and they seem not to want to be formated in CSS

I know my old version of DW wouldn't even render them in wysiwyg -- so
I've always thought they were looked down on in the web community.
So my question is is there something better than iframes out there?
'Better' can be considered as more flexible to formating, more of an
industry standard,etc.
I'm not considering flash because I'm looking for html/xhtml code that
will pass W3C validation.
thanks

[ADW] watermark bkg problem

I have a container div with a background image, and within this div, I want to put a div with a background watermark that covers part of the container div. In Dreamweaver Design view I can see the watermark image fine, but in IE and Firefox preview, and online, the watermark image (images/55kBkg.gif) is not visible. No problem at all with the container background, only the watermark gif within the container.

the html code:

<div id="page">
stuff . . .
<div id="55kBkg">
stuff . . .
</div> <!--end 55kBkg -->
</div> <!--end page-->

the css is this:
#page { background-image: url(images/bkgMid2.jpg); background-color: #09f; color: #000; margin-left: auto; margin-right:auto; padding: 0; width: 990px;}

#55kBkg {background-image:url(images/55kBkg.gif)}

RE: [ADW] OT: "www." prefix

> I am curious though, is the desire to remove the necessity of using

Not in my opinion.

The whole "www" thing, as Simon largely pointed out, was originally as a
subdomain at a domain's physical location. On the server, you'd have the
root folder associated with the domain...

/myDomain

... then you'd have "subdomains" based on the prefix...

/myDomain/www
/myDomain/ftp
/myDomain/webmail
/myDomain/whateverElse

...etc. It had everything to do with how webservers connected you to the
right location on the server.

I think removing the "www" simply has to do with the fact that it's not
necessary. As far as I'm concerned, the biggest challenge with this is
search engines and how they view www.myDomain.com and myDomain.com as
possibly different entities. There is also the fact that most mail software
and office application suites will automatically translate web addresses
beginning with "www." into hyperlinks.

The IPv6, on the other hand, is something that I view as a very real
necessity. It's either that or an over-abundance of shared IP addresses and
dynamic domain names.

IPv6 has to do with internet addressing (much like MAC IDs on network
devices), whereas the "www" has to do with user habits and software
conveniences.

There's no comparing the two or making causal connections. They operate at
two different layers (application vs. network) with regards to the internet.
The only connection has to do with associating the right domain name (NOT
web URL) to the right IP, so that the DNS resolves properly.

You might want to read up on all of this at Wikipedia, under the following
terms:

DNS
DNS zone
IPv6
IP
httpd

Thanks Rob.

I am curious though, is the desire to remove the necessity of using www from
addresses have to do with remolding our mindsets to the 6 number ip address
transition?

The www part of the address is not actually required and is in essence a
sub domain, however, many people do not configure their domains to work
without it and from a general users perspective they recognise it and
have been led to believe that all domains have to have it. Most of my
clients cannot get their heads around the fact that I host test sites on
subdomains e.g. http://test.myclient.com so I also have to configure

http://www.test.myclient.com because they automatically prefix the
address with www.

There is actually a campaign to deprecate the use of www in domains:

That depends largely on the way you design your site. If each
component of your page has a set width, it will stay the same
regardless of the visitor's screen resolution. However, if you set
widths to percentages, ems, or other relative units, your layout will
scale nicely to the size of your visitor's screen.

[ADW] Formatting Question ANCIENT DW-4

Greetings...can someone help this novice dinosaur? :-)

I am in the dark ages using DW-4...still suits me fine for the minimal
work I do.

I could be mistaken, but isn't there a setting or command to insert
that will automatically adjust the dimensions of pages to fit any
screen resolution on a user-by-user basis? IE, so that pages that fit
800x600 perfectly also fit 1024x768 instead of "shrinking" on the screen?

Thanks so much in advance...............jen smith

Re: [ADW] puzzled by div displays

There are several potential issues that may be causing the problem.

I'd recommend off the top that you get rid of the table that you are using to display the navbar. Most of the problems are going to be because of it.

That said, you want to start by deleting the paragraph tags that are around several of the images in the table. That *could* be causing the problem.
Next, delete the embedded stylesheet on the page that is setting images within table cells to display as block elements.
Then, try adding a style rule to make sure that you don't have any margins or padding in the table:

#navbarTbl, #navbarTbl tr, #navbarTbl td, #navbarTbl img { margin:0; padding:0; }

This should eliminate any padding and margins around and within the table, the row of the table, the cells, and the images within it. Note that the last one won't be necessary if you get rid of the display:block on the images as recommended above.

Again, it would be easier to get rid of the table altogether (as well as the tables being used for the logo and the search box), but try those things above and see if they work.

Subject: [ADW] puzzled by div displays

I am trying to do what's on this page, http://onyxspectrum .com/onyxnew/ index.html

I wrote the CSS, and then began to build the page. Above the navbar, I have a gap I can't
explain.

CSS: http://onyxspectrum .com/onyxnew/ css/onyx_ styles_05. css
the page: http://onyxspectrum .com/onyxnew/ index_css06. html

To make matters more puzzling, the next div moves to the right, even though there's no
FLOAT or other instruction telling it to do so.

http://onyxspectrum .com/onyxnew/ index_css08. html

What am I getting wrong?

I have a client that wants to update their website. Pretty basic
stuff - they have a scheme in mind and I'm helping them get started.
There previous site has been stagnant for two years (yes, really).
They are on a budget (my assistance is offered pro bono) however they
are willing to pay for initial development.
Looking for someone to develop the template with navigation, I'll
populate the pages/maintain based on template.
Any interest? I'll provide more detail upon your reply.
tia,
tom

Re: [ADW] highlighted text help

The default width of a block element such as a paragraph is 100% of the width of its parent. So if the paragraph is directly in the body, it will be 100% of the width of the browser window.

The easiest fix here would be to nest a span in the paragraph and apply the style to the span. A span is an inline element, so its width will be the width of the content, which is what you want here.

<p><span class="special">ON SPECIAL - Was $450.</span></p>

Then you can modify your CSS selector to use the span:
span.special

Or make it a bit more flexible and leave the element off:
.special

I am trying to make a highlighted text sign using CSS.

My problem is the highlight goes from one side of the table to the other,
leaving a lot of highlighted area that is not text.

I have made the similar thing before but it was for a link and it
highlighted only the text. This time, it is only for text only (no link).
What am I doing wrong?

Here is what I have:

CSS -

p.special{color: #FFFF66; background-color: #FF6600; font-size : 1.1em;
font-weight : 700; text-align:center; border-style : solid; border-width :

[ADW] Site developer wanted

I have a client that wants to update their website. Pretty basic
stuff - they have a scheme in mind and I'm helping them get started.
There previous site has been stagnant for two years (yes, really).
They are on a budget (my assistance is offered pro bono) however they
are willing to pay for initial development.
Looking for someone to develop the template with navigation, I'll
populate the pages/maintain based on template.
Any interest? I'll provide more detail upon your reply.
tia,
tom

[ADW] newbie here - need help with jpg and text coding

Hello,

I am attempting to do a simple webpage for some of the books that we carry where I work. The one that I am currently working on is giving me a bit of trouble. I haven't worked with HTML or webdesign for several years, so am a bit rusty.

Basically, what I want is to have a small jpg on the right side of the page, with the text nicely lined up against it on the left of the jpg. I have been able to do this with the jpg on the left side of the page, with the text lined up nicely on the right, but when I attempt to code so it does the opposite, it falls apart. (I am using <tr>)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Tammy

[ADW] highlighted text help

I am trying to make a highlighted text sign using CSS.

RE: [ADW] page validation question......

> What exactly do you mean?

Just that the application is older. It is unsupported. Any "validation",
DOCTYPEs, etc., are only going to be as recent as the last update done to
the program.

FWIW, you may want to check you validation settings on Homesite. Also, do
you use the built-in validation or CSE HTML Validator? The built in one is
fairly accurate, but only to the extent that your validating for the right
stuff.

Also note that the validator options do not allow for XHTML 1.1 (only XHTML
1.0 Strict).

As another FWIW, I've found the Dreamweaver validator to be very accurate.
However, like the Homesite validator, and the CSE HTML Validator, they are
only as good as what you have them set to check. (Or what you CAN set them
to check.)

RE: [ADW] OT: Making Interactive Pages of World Map

My boss wants me to make a section of our website that uses a world
map to show our offices. Example, start with a map of the world and
the different continents. Then when you click on say North America,
you would next get a closeup of USA and Canada. When you click on a
state or providence, then you would get the close up of that state or
providence.

Here is a link that you might find helpful for ideas or possibly link to.

Re: [ADW] page validation question......

Hey Rob. Thanks for the reply. (You too, everybody!)

When you say:

> (Unless you are very
> adept at editing it's configuration, the code is writes is circa 2003.)

What exactly do you mean?

I get that general vibe from it but I'm not exactly sure what it is that's
giving me that feeling.

I did, however, get my page to validate properly! Started out with 93
errors!! Funny thing is that Homesite gave me absolutely none. Zero. Not
in transitional or strict. (In fact, I had it set to strict before I
presented it to the council at the W3C. (I can see all 12 of
them.....sitting around a huge touch-screen monitor with red "ipens" just
a-circlin' away.....)

I even got so lame as to use their little "badge".

Let a guy sit with it for a couple of hours........SHEESH!

;-)

It's not finished by any means so please.......no more ipens. Needs a few
tweaks (a picture or two, I think) but that's depending on the client who is
pleased right now too, so that's good.

[ADW] DW CS3 OSX - crashes upon start up - everytime

This already came thru today. Why the repeat? Meant nicely btw.

Art

Hi-
I purchased the Adobe Web Premium - 30 day trial DVD. Got it
yesterday, and installed all programs for the first time - yesterday.
PS opens, no problem. Flash, Fireworks, Illus and Acrobat all open
no problem. However, DW CS3 crashes shortly after the green icon does
it's bouncing up and down routine. I get this message "the application
Dreamweaver quit unexpectedly"

I have done the Uninstall (twice) of Dreamweaver and Dreamweaver
reinstall of and still no dice.

When I look at the report, the thing that stands out for me, and I'm
not sure if it's actually a real concern - is the 7th line which says
Parent: WindowServer. Now since I am using OSX 10.4 - should this
cause alarm bells for me?

The program has not opened successfully snce the original install
yesterday. And all the other programs DO work. Everything except DW.
Also, I have a working version of DW8 on my computer, that still opens
- would this be clashing with CS3 in any way?

I am offered options to try again, close or show report.

Re: [ADW] Ajax in Dreamweaver

Mike, in follow up to what Rob said, here is the Spry (DWCS3's Ajax
framework; tutorial and info section)

This should answer some questions.

Aaron,

There's nothing wrong with HomeSite, and I still use it a lot. It is,
however, showing signs of technology outpacing it. (Unless you are very
adept at editing it's configuration, the code is writes is circa 2003.)

Can you share a link or code that your having validation issues with?

Re: [ADW] page validation question......

Without being able to see the pages in question, it's hard to know what exactly you are or are not doing correctly, but the simple answer to your question is that yes, Dreamweaver does include a validator. Simply click on Window -> Validate. This is in versions 8 and CS3 - someone still using one of the older versions will need to confirm whether or not it was present before version 8, since I simply don't remember.

Subject: [ADW] page validation question......

Hi all.

So, I've messed around with Dreamweaver a bit but something about it seems
kinda "clunky". (Don't flame yet, please. Read on ;-)

I've been using Homesite and like what it does but I'll be damned if it's
actually validating my page!

When I make my page live and check it with the W3C validator it lights up
like a Xmas tree (i.e. MANY problems).

What's strange is that when I validate it in Homesite, I get a few errors,
correct them, and then it says "no errors or warnings". That's when I
think, "OK, all's well!"

However, all is NOT well. The W3C validator makes me feel like the dog's
dinner.

Does Dreamweaver have a decent validator?

Or is there something I'm not doing in Homesite to make it validate "right"?

I appreciate you reading this, group!

Thanks!

-Aaron

Re: [ADW] Ajax in Dreamweaver

Ajax simply stands for "Asynchronous JavaScript and XML". It's not a language or technology so much as it is a concept. Since Dreamweaver can certainly handle both JavaScript and XML, then the simple answer is yes, you can write Ajax in it.

Most people, when they talk about Ajax, are talking about developing in one of several dozen Ajax libraries that have been developed. If you have Dreamweaver CS3, it includes built-in support for Spry, which is Adobe's library. Beyond that, any other development you'd want to do would need to be done in code view. Since you'll be mostly writing JavaScript, you will have the normal range to DW code features available to you, including line numbers, color coding, and limited code hinting. You'll also end up doing a lot of CSS and XHTML stuff, since most Ajax relies on using JS to manipulate CSS and XHTML.

Re: [ADW] page validation question......

I've never used Homesite but the validation in DW is funky at best. I suffer
through the W3C validator i know it's a pain but when your can get that
little green light it feels so good!

Re: [ADW] OT: Making Interactive Pages of World Map

You wouldn't necessarily have to do it in Flash. That would only be required if you needed the thing to be animated. You can certainly do this with a series of static images that you make into image maps, with the relevant continents being linked to pages that show the appropriate region, which is in turn an image map with areas linked to the next level down, and so forth.

Flash would make this prettier and more interactive, but require a steeper learning curve.

My boss wants me to make a section of our website that uses a world
map to show our offices. Example, start with a map of the world and
the different continents. Then when you click on say North America,
you would next get a closeup of USA and Canada. When you click on a
state or providence, then you would get the close up of that state or
providence.

I am guessing that this must be done in flash, but I haven't had the
best luck with flash and Dreamweaver8 lately. However, I am wondering
if anyone else has had to do a similar thing, and what they used to
accomplish this?

Oh, and did I mention that my boss, of course, doesn't want to pay for
any scripts or software...he thinks I should create it from scratch.

[ADW] page validation question......

Thanks!

-Aaron

Can you program Ajax pages in Dreamweaver or is it an add-on that is
required? In not, does Dreamweaver offer something comparable to Ajax?

You can use Contribute to edit the *static* portions of dynamic pages,
but if you don't have a template to control which parts the users can
edit, they could delete the php portions of the page. I am not sure how
php code will show up, the only stuff I have Contribute connections for
is currently on the IIS server, and asp code shows up with the little
yellow <ASP> symbol. I was able to backspace over it, however. I don't
use Contribute here for anything other than faculty/staff to use to
update course/personal pages.

If the client updates are minimal, it might be easier to set up php
pages for them to make the changes and store those in a database as well.

[ADW] Dreamweaver templates & Contribute

I'm considering using Contribute for a site I'm building for a client who wants to be able to update small sections of it occasionally...but despite having read most of two different books on Contribute, I still have one huge question: to use Contribute,
must sites be built using Dreamweaver templates...or is that just the most common technique? If I build a non-template site, which instead uses php to feed uniform menus and other information to each page, will I still be able to use Contribute for a few
content areas?

Re: [ADW] Dreamweaver MX and VISTA OS

Officially, Adobe does not support any version of their software prior to CS3 on Vista. That doesn't mean that they won't work, but merely that if they don't, you can't call customer service and get help.

Unofficially, there are plenty of reports out there of folks using older versions of Dreamweaver quite successfully on Vista. You're going to just have to install it and see what happens.

Robin,

You can use nested <ol>'s like you do nested unordered lists, but
getting the numbering to be as you want it may not be possible. If you
were happy to not have the parent item's number included in the number,
simply nest another ordered list inside. Otherwise, you will probably
have to do it manually.

I wanted to do this as I had a document with a table of contents (which
linked to the appropriate sections in the document) that was numbered
like this. I found this [1] in the CSS2 spec, but it pretty much didn't
work when I tried it.

I ended up doing something that was totally non-semantic and drove me
nuts, but it displayed correctly. :-(

Hi Rob
I took your advice... got it to validate, and now things are looking better.
There still is a space I can't figure out under the second row and the
border will still not show up on the left hand cell (left and bottom).

Can you take another look? Thanks much

Dave,

Two others that I've utilized are browsershots.org and browsercam.com. In
addition, the NetRenderer site you mentioned has a list of browser
previewing services at http://ipinfo.info/html/rendering_services.php.

To the group: If you access this group via the web, I've added a folder to
the LINKs section called "Online Browser Testing Sites" that has the links
to browsershots.org, browsercam.org, netrenderer, and the resource list at
netrenderer. The direct link is

RE: [ADW] cells not aligning properly in IE

Miriam,

The first few things you need to fix up:

a) make sure your code validates. it doesn't. the biggest issue is one or
more errant SPAN tags. http://validator.w3.org/

b) your layout table has inconsistent widths. the TABLE tag specifies 712,
the first row is an image 806 pixels wide, the next rew is a series of
images that are 809 pixels wide.

Fix these and then see what still needs to be resolved.

RE: [ADW] Ordered List and indents

Robin,

FYI... AFAIK you cannot use an <ol> element to get the numbering you want.
You need to create the list with the enumeration as literal text.

Good morning
Can you guys takea look at this site I'm working on?
Looks good on the Mac. Looks fine on PC in Firefox, but on PC in IE the left hand cells are
not aligning properly and the border on the left cell is not showing up.

Any ideas?
Thanks in Advance

I have an ordered list with some sub paragraphs.

How can I achieve this sort of format:

1. The Text as needed.
2. The Text as needed.
3. The Text as needed.
3.1 The Text as needed.
3.2 The Text as needed.
4. The Text as needed.
5. The Text as needed.

So far the indented line has taken the next number.

RE: [ADW] import sites from DW8 into CS3

Al,

On Windows XP (2000 and 2003) the registry settings are stored in several
different locations. See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Registry

The information relating to your old site definitions would be located in:

D: (formerly your C: drive)/Documents and Settings/%UserName%/ntuser.dat

However, since you've also changed out your hard drive, transferring these
settings *will* be more problems than it is worth. Again, as I mentioned
before, there are different settings between the MX04 registry keys and the
CS3 registry keys. So you cannot simply copy and paste them. You've got to
go through and manually edit each and everyone of them.

That is a painstaking process and one that I do not have the time to walk
through with you. (I'd have to take a day or more off of work to get you
through that.) I tried it before, it was a royal PITA. In the end, the time
you spend editing and recovering each INDIVIDUAL site definition _will_ take
you longer than simply recreating them.

As someone else previously recommended, I would simply recreate the site
definitions as the need arises to edit/maintain each site. (Do you really
make updates to 70+ sites on a daily -- or even weekly -- basis? Phew.)

[ADW] IE screenshots for cross-browser checks

I ran across this today wandering about. It gives you an image of what
your page would look like in IE 7, 6, and 5.5. So far it looks like a
useful tool. There is even a firefox extension to view any page your
already on with it. So far the tool and extension seem to work well.
Of course since I do not have IE 5.5 or 6 available to me I cannot
compare, but from what I know of typical behaviors it seems accurate
so far. This seems to have around for over a year and is a free
service. I'm surprised I haven't heard it discussed here before. To
Mac and Linux users it's seems like a major gift. Possibly those who
have the other browsers will do some comparison and report how
accurate it is.

RE: [ADW] OT: Recommend a Registry Repair program?

Marlene:

Then I'll buy Registry Mechanic.

I ran two demos yesterday, and Registry Mechanic was one of them. I should have waited. I was stuck in a 7 1/2 hour meeting, got bored, and decided to "fix" my registry by running both programs back-to-back. Not very wise. One of them hosed Firefox, but only in my AT&T Yahoo email when I clicked on the "Compose" button. I only got a To: and Subject: field, but no message box where I could actually compose my emails. Same result after a reboot.

I ran both of the programs' restore functions, rebooted, and all is well. Lucky me.

So I'll go with Registry Mechanic on your word.

I'm looking for a reliable registry repair program. Anything for free? I
installed the following demo:

http://www.pctools. <http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic>
com/registry-mechanic

I installed Google Earth, tried to run in with DirectX, and now it crashes
every time I try to open it. After I delete Google Earth and reinstall, it
still defaults to DirectX and still crashes.

I just need to clean it out of my registry and attempt a clean reinstall.

RE: [ADW] OT: Recommend a Registry Repair program?

Gary,

I love Registry Mechanic.
It has saved me, or should I say, my laptop, several times by backing up and
creating a restore point to the last good configuration.
I have it so it runs every time I boot up.
I have never had any issues with it no matter what I've installed.

Subject: [ADW] OT: Recommend a Registry Repair program?

I'm looking for a reliable registry repair program. Anything for free? I
installed the following demo:

http://www.pctools. <http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic>
com/registry-mechanic

I installed Google Earth, tried to run in with DirectX, and now it crashes
every time I try to open it. After I delete Google Earth and reinstall, it
still defaults to DirectX and still crashes.

I just need to clean it out of my registry and attempt a clean reinstall.

RE: [ADW] import sites from DW8 into CS3

Al,

As I've mentioned on the thread the site definitions are stored in Windows
Registry.

While they all appear similar, and seem to be "movable", there are
differences in the settings that prohibit a simple "export/edit/import"
style moving of the definitions from the DW MX04 keys to the CS3 keys. (I've
tried doing this, and it doesn't work nicely without a lot of intervention
to fix up the differences in the registry entries.)

Also, as you've mentioned the drive that had your registry is now your "D"
drive. So I'm also kind of scratching my head wondering where you'd be
getting the site definitions from anyway?

You're probably at the "fish or cut bait" moment. There's a point where
trying to remedy a problem simply becomes more time consuming that redoing
the settings.

RE: [ADW] Firefox and border-style problem

Glenn,

That is because the browsers you are asking about are using the EMBED tag
for displaying the Flash element, and your style only applies to the OBJECT
tag. Also, since you are using Adobe's dynamic content rewrite script for
displaying the Flash element, you ought to try simply putting the border on
the containing div#slideshow. If necessary set the width of that div so that
it displays the border properly.

Re: [ADW] import sites from DW8 into CS3

I believe that all the site information files can be copied from this location (assuming WinXP): Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8\Configuration. The folder labeled SiteCache has the site files (with a .dws extension). There are other important configuration folders for each site within the SiteCache folder, as well. I have been synchronizing two computers, which I use to run Dreamweaver and updating this folder after using Dreamweaver on one computer results in the other computer's site files containing identical site preferences/changes to preferences for each site as the computer on which those site-specific changes were made, so I believe I have pointed to the correct directory containing all the site information.

[ADW] (unknown)

Thought Id start a new thread on my topic of importing olden "site defs" into CS3

I used MM Exporter (http://mm-exporter.joexx.de) religiously in my MX 2004 days. I did not update my self DW-wise, until CS3 just a few weeks ago.

MM Exporter has two features for getting MX 2004 and earlier site into v 8.

One is "Site Rescue". That takes the old NTuser.dat files used by DW for "site defs," and creates a new file called Sites_Converted_to_DW8 OR Sites_Converted_to_MX04.reg

One is supposed to be able to double click this new file and WA-LAH, "site defs" are now in DW 8 or MX 2004. (Ive tried both) But its not wokring.

When I Dbl-Clk either, Im asked the reg question to which i say YES. I reboot an no sites in any of my installed DW's. I have MX2004, DW8, and DW9 (CS3) installed now trying to get this done.

Im tired.

Re: [ADW] import sites from DW8 into CS3

I had been using MX 2004 all this time, and did backs with MMExporter all said time. But since that old format does not play well with v8 or v9, I'm out of luck I guess.

[ADW] Re: a:hover tag problem

Rob,
I had already followed Cheryl's instructions just to be sure the hovering would work across most browsers.
Nevertheless many thanks for the sample page.

The rounded corner borders are there for a more uniform look as there are horizontal as well as vertical images.
The highlight is there so the viewer clicks the right thumbnail to go to the actual image which is on its own page.

Till next time,which without any doubt will come as I'm very new to DW.
Thanks for your help!
