[ADW] Apache as Test Server

How can I work on php pages with DW? I have DW mx and have basically no
experience with php. From what I have read, I need to install a Apache
server
on my local machine in order to work on php pages? Not sure if that is
correct. If so how do I do that?

Thanks
Rene

Rene.

Just this evening I finished installing the Apache software on both my
laptop and also my desktop computer. I believe everything is working
satisfactorily.

I needed a test server, too, and did not have the Professional version of
Windows xp on either computer so I could not use the IIS function provided
with the Pro version. The Apache package was not all that difficult-took me
about three hours to figure it all out. I suggest you go to www.xampp.org
<http://www.xampp.org/> and use their package to do the download and
install. XAMPP makes things easier.

I cannot speak for DW-mx as to whether it is equipped to work with PHP but
the XAMPP utility downloads and installs everything you will need to setup a
test server. Download the full version, not the lite version, of Apache
because it is limited. The full version does it all and does not take all
that much room on the hard drive.

Once installed, the httpd.conf file will need to be modified to make it all
work. This file contains the configuration data and documentation. The
file contains the documentation necessary for the mods.

One book I used is: Beginning PHP, Apache, MySQL web development. ISBN:
9780596529949. The book walks you through the setup. I got it at the local
library. Unfortunately, I did not read the book until after I was finished
with the install. I am reading it now to learn the basics of the Apache,
PHP, etc.

An additional resource, you can try is the w3c tutorials at
www.w3schools.com <http://www.w3schools.com/> The folks there are offering
FREE online training, including the stuff you need, and it is fairly
straight forward. w3c is the World Wide Web Consortium-the experts on all
facets of the web, servers, browsers, xhtml, PHP, etc.

Hope this helps.

Peace and blessings. Ed

[ADW] Embedding Video Problems

Recently I bought a new iMac with Leopard and I also upgraded to
DWCS3. I am trying to add a .wmv movie to the page, but it won't work.

Now, I just get a box with the puzzle piece. When I click on it, I get
this message:
Unable to find the plugin that handles this media type.
Dreamweaver looks in both the "Configuration/Plugins" folder and the
plugins folder for each of your installed browsers.

I don't know what this means.

I do have the Windows Media Player on my computer and it works fine.
Just for information, I also get the same problem when I try to embed
a Quicktime video, but right now, I want to do a .wmv.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Jan

[ADW] audio files

I have a cda file from an hour-long radio show that I converted to MP3. Even after compressing it it's still about 5MB. When I test it only 20 minutes of it plays. What am I missing? Are there any guidelines or limits for file sizes? Any tips or tutorials (gotta be for dummies because this is my first attempt) would be greatly appreciated.

RE: [ADW] How to ... Random button display text

Brad,

The way I would approach this is either with JavaScript or server-side code,
that generates a randomized list of text (and corresponding links) and then
applies them to the buttons when the page loads, using the current universal
time as a seed for the random number generation.

Again, this is just how I would do it.

Re: [ADW] Re: OT: Skinny Pop-Up Windows in Firefox v. 2.0.0.13

I added all the add-ons back that I had used, plus my theme (Noia 2.0 Extreme 3.371) and everything is working fine. I don't know what happened.

OK. Now add your add-ons back, one by one, and see which causes the
problem. Be sure to let us know.

I can't remember and find the answer I got last week (middle-age and

Is there a way to load a Flash movie without using the "embed"
command, that fails DW validation?

I've looked at the Lynda videos and their training all use "embed".

Thanks (again)

Try starting FF in safe mode.

Re: [ADW] Anyone used a background image for spry menus?

Art,

Yes, I have used a background image with a Spry horizontal menu. In the Spry CSS it uses just one property for all of the li's. So if you want something different for your submenus, you need to define it in your CSS. Something like ul.MenuBarHorizontal li ul {}. It has been a while since I did that, but if I remember right, that should get you started.

I posted this question Sunday, but that was a dumb move, since its usually a morgue on Sundays.

Has anyone here used a background image in Spry vertical or horizontal menu, an image that is the full size of the <li> item?

Thanks,

Uninstalling FF does not remove the exiting Profiles folder. Better is
to start FF in safe mode.

Re: [ADW] Video effect on web page

She's Flash Video.

Flash Video supports the use of an alpha channel, where you can make the background of the video transparent. Most likely, it was shot in front of a green screen - if you've ever watched the special features of a sci-fi DVD, you've probably seen that being done. So you shoot in front of the green screen, and then go into a video editing tool such as Adobe Premiere (and there's no way to tell specifically what editor that site might have used). In the editor, you can designate the particular shade of green as the alpha channel. Then, when you import the video into Flash to convert it to the .flv format, it notices the alpha channel and keeps it transparent. From there, you simply place the video into a Flash movie as you normally would, and when you publish, you can designate that the movie itself be transparent.

More specific questions would be best directed to a Flash and/or video group.

[ADW] Anyone used a background image for spry menus?

I posted this question Sunday, but that was a dumb move, since its usually a morgue on Sundays.

Has anyone here used a background image in Spry vertical or horizontal menu, an image that is the full size of the <li> item?

Thanks,

Art

Still not resolved. I may have to wait for the next update. I've taken to
using IE7 when I run apps. that have pop-ups.

Gary,

Goto www.trotterconstruction.com; the effect of "mouse over"
display's text. I want the text to randomly appear on each button

Re: [ADW] Re: OT: Skinny Pop-Up Windows in Firefox v. 2.0.0.13

Still not resolved. I may have to wait for the next update. I've taken to using IE7 when I run apps. that have pop-ups.

it was FF.

[ADW] Re: Controlling indent of LI

I currently dont know how to indent text from the bullet point, only
how to give it padding/margin.

ul {list-style-type::none;
padding-left:0px;
margin-left:150px;

}

or apply to single li

Cheers

Re: [ADW] How to ... Random button display text

Brad:

Could you be more specific? Can you point us toward Web pages that have this effect? It's hard to know what you are looking for.

There is "more than one way to skin a cat", you might say. Often, there are many possible solutions to get a preferred effect or design on a page.

RE: [ADW] DW/Vista problems ?

I was a beta test for Vista and have run it full time since RC1 on my
primary computer. We have half a dozen computers running Vista natively.
Another two have run Vista under Parallels - one of which even ran beta
versions very sweetly.

I have heard Mac people complain about newer operating systems especially
during the move from OS 9 to OS X. The change from XP to Vista is similar in
that there are many, many things considerably different from the older OS in
the new one.

Re: [ADW] DW/Vista problems ?

I have CS3 and Vista Ultimate. I am in the middle for sure, I have experienced some crashing when I close the programs. I am sure Adobe is hard at work to resolve any issues you have. I would recommend sticking with XP if you have no real reason to upgrade to Vista. Even with SP1 I still have issues with Vista. I like everything about the OS and Microsoft will eventually get it up to speed.

I'm going to get a new computer - I'm told DW crashes with Vista, I have DWCS3. anyone care to comment pro or con? It seems like people are either for or against Vista, no middle ground, but I just got the DW when it came out last April and I sure don't want to replace it.

Yes. Especially when it was my mother's sewing machine. I think my life was
threatened on several occassions and ice cream priveledges revoked. The
funny thing is that I always seemed to put things back together and have
them working, but with leftover screws, washers, bushings, etc.

I've been running CS3 on Vista since CS3's release on several of my
studio/training lab workstations. No problems of it crashing.

Frequently, I've found that when folks are having Vista problems, they're
often running it on an underpowered workstation. 2 GB RAM is the minimum I
recommend for my clients but Vista and your apps will run more trouble-free
with 4GB. If you're still having problems with 4GB RAM, they I'd
uninstall/re-install CS3. There might have been a glitch when the apps were
installed the first time.missing driver, etc.

If you're also upgrading MS Office, take one of Microsoft's online tutorials
on using the new Ribbon Bar in the 2007-2008 office suite. It's a bit
confusing at first without some help.

RE: [ADW] PHP & DW

From Dreamweaver MX 2004, The Missing Manual.Pogue Press.

"PHP (PHP Hypertext Preprocessor) is a programming language that was created
specifically for building dynamic Web pages. It works in conjunction with a
variety of Web servers including IIS, but was initially created for the
Apache Web server. Like Apache itself, it's available as a free download for
Windows, Mac OS X, or any flavor of Unix or Linux. Download it from
www.php.net <http://www.php.net/>

While PHP can work with a variety of different database servers, Dreamweaver
MX 2004 only understands MySQL-another free download available at
www.mysql.com <http://www.mysql.com/>

Kathi A.

I'm not sure that Dreamweaver MX had php support in the box. I seem to
recall that you had to use Interkat extensions with that version, it is
quite old.

How can I work on php pages with DW? I have DW mx and have basically no
experience with php. From what I have read, I need to install a Apache
server
on my local machine in order to work on php pages? Not sure if that is
correct. If so how do I do that?

RE: [ADW] DW/Vista problems ?

Then you were told wrong. I ran Dreamweaver 8 with Vista (it did need the
update to 8.02 but that was because of IE 7's security model not Vista)
until CS 3 came out. I've been running CS 3 with Vista ever since. CS 3 is
the latest version so there is nothing to 'replace' it with.

I'm going to get a new computer - I'm told DW crashes with Vista, I have
DWCS3. anyone care to comment pro or con? It seems like people are either
for or against Vista, no middle ground, but I just got the DW when it came
out last April and I sure don't want to replace it.

I'm not sure that Dreamweaver MX had php support in the box. I seem to
recall that you had to use Interkat extensions with that version, it is
quite old.

Re: [ADW] PHP & DW

Rene,

The book Darrell recommended is totally awesome on walking you thru the
steps on setting up the php , mysql server, and getting you going on the
language.

The only thing is, DW CS3 and that book really dive into alot of the spry
ajax thing, so 1/2 the book covers stuff for DW CS3 only, so a book by
David Powers that was recommended by Rob Huddleston and David Powers to our
forum back to Rob was for users of DW 8 or before:

http://www.amazon.com/Foundation-PHP-Dreamweaver-David-Powers/dp/1590595696

If you have a Books A Million store near you (if Amazon doesn't work) than
they probably have it.

Barnes and Noble unforutnately only carry about 1/4 of the internet tech
book selection in the 5 stores that I have checked.

When you go to that link, it gives you a look inside the book link with the
total table of contents. The books only $ 23 bucks, and David Powers is a
stud the way he writes. His books teach you a lot, and also take into
account in case you are a Moron or a Slow Learner :)

Couldn't resist the terms ;)

[ADW] Spry Vertical Menu w using a background image instead of color

Hi All,

Going nuts here.

I'm using the vertical spry menu widget w DW CS3 and trying to alter the css style sheet, so that I can use a li class for each of the 14 links on this page, with an upstate and a hover state only. (the focus, and hover while down will be the same as the others, to keep it simple and not too distracting)

The page is here that I will be replacing the entire background image in sidebar1 and sidebar2 with a custom spry menu with the 14 li classes for 2 seperate menus:

http://audibleimagesav.com/blank_doc.html

Has anyone used a background image in place of just using bkgrd colors and borders for the spry menu ?

I am aware of the attributes that the help docs suggest that need to be altered as listed here :
http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/Spry/1.4/help.html?content=WS0BB04E11-1BE3-4a67-BC94-BE7DA93A0159.html

I have been working on just an experimental page, that is now hacked up, however if you want to see that it is here with only the first list item coded:

http://audibleimagesav.com/site%20theme%20ideas/sprymenu_exp.html

The spry css menu widget for that page is here:
http://audibleimagesav.com/SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarVertical.css

So in short, has anyone done a bkgrd image for the main menu (not submenu) in a spry widget?

Thanks in advance.

RE: [ADW] PHP & DW

IMO, the best option is to get a book devoted to this topic. A good one is
David Power's "The Essential Guide to Dreamweaver CS3 with CSS, Ajax, and
PHP". He walks you through installing Apache, PHP and MySQL on both Mac and
Windows. Here's the link to it on Amazon; http://tinyurl.com/2ljol8

Even though you have DW MX, I believe much of the info on PHP will still be
useable to you. You may not be able to perform some options using DW's
menus, but he shows all of the source code involved.

PHP is a programming language that is often used with the database MySQL.
You'll probably see more books on PHP that include MySQL than not.

What is it that you want to do with PHP? Make a calendar, email form,
shopping cart, etc.? If you Google a combination of the words, tutorial,
php, dreamweaver, email form, etc., you'll find what you need. Chances are,
someone has already written the program that does what you want and is
available for free!

RE: [ADW] OT: mailto with "cc"and "subject"

Rob:

I was laughing out loud, thanks for that poetic sharing, really.

I feel a bit envious, as typically I experience overwhelm and confusion when
faced with a puzzle.

I know exactly how you might feel though, and actively want to learn now to
absorb some of your approach.

In retrospect, I was just told over and over again that I was unable and
un-capable of doing things,

And now, at age 55, I have to "undo" all that, and re-write that code into
something like this:

"It's possible to change my neural pathways, beliefs and pattern of how I
experience situations and go about things".

NLP has been offering a nice set of tools for that.

With that said: Thank you for sharing, Rob!

I figured that out on my own. Sort of. I saw a prefilled subject line on a
mailto: link many many years back. The syntax of the link looked
suspiciously like a "GET" URL construct from a FORM SUBMIT. So for s--ts and
giggles, I tried creating MAILTO: strings using the same syntax for the
"CC", "BCC", and "SUBJECT". It worked.

Have you checked Bugzilla? A fix may already be on the way. Also,
disable your extensions one by one to see if that's causing the
problem.

I haven't run into this particular issue, but I did have an issue a
while ago in FF2 on the Mac: when I opened a new tab, it would limit
my viewing area to about 80px, too small for the Close X to appear. It
was fixed in the next Firefox update.

[ADW] OT: Skinny Pop-Up Windows in Firefox v. 2.0.0.13

For some reason, Firefox has started acting strange on my desktop PC. All pop-up windows only open up ca. 230px wide. Their respective heights are correct. It's only the width that is off.

Anyone see anything like this before? I can jump to IE7 or Opera to do what I need to do with various apps. that require pop-ups, but I prefer FF.

Re: [ADW] Problem with menu

It could easily be causing it.

If your browser doesn't know how to render the document because the doctype
it is reading is wrong, it may be quirking out.

In order to see if it is really IE6 causing the problem, like I said, you
need to have the rest of the variables in a control environment.

RE: [ADW] Controlling indent of LI

To Boil it all down, and what we're left with is this: if you want consistent rendering of lists between Gecko, Internet Explorer, and Opera, you need to set both

- the left margin and
- left padding

of the ul element.

We can ignore li altogether for these purposes.

If you want to reproduce the default display in Explorer/Opera model/Netscape 6.x, you write:
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
ol ul {
margin-left: 1.25em;
padding-left: 1.25em;
}

OR

ol ul {
margin-left: .9em;
padding-left: .9em;
}

Of course, you can fill in your own preferred values. Set both to "px" if you like-- there's no reason why you have to stick with ems or % indentation. But they are better!

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Conclusion:
In the end, we can see that none of the browsers mentioned in this article is right or wrong about how they lay out lists. They use different default styles, and that's where the problems creep in. By making sure you style both the left padding and left margin of lists, you can find much greater cross-browser consistency in your list indentation.
Recommendations

* When altering the indentation of lists, make sure to set both the padding and margin.

Thanks much!

RE: [ADW] Controlling indent of LI

You control the line indent with margin-left in your css but the only really
successful way I have know of to control space between the bullet and the
text is to replace the bullet with a background image and use padding-left.

ul {margin: 0; padding: 0;} /*ul only affects the list container not the
list items.*/

li {
margin-left: 3px;
background: url(img/bullet.gif) norepeat;
padding-left: 10px;
}

Note I did not verify the css above and simply wrote it off the top of my
head so check for proper syntax on the background values.

I've got a bulleted list. I'd like to indent the bullet itself only a
few pixels and also control the space between the bullet and the text.

I've played with the UL style. No soap. I've tried changing the LI
style. Still no results.

This is where I'm at:

ul {

margin-bottom: 0px;
margin-left: 0px;
}

li {
list-style-image: url(img/bullet.gif);
}

Any advice on getting the desired effect?

Your doc type doesn't say transisitional or strict, just xhtml 1.1, and it
would be a good idea to decide on that so that you are working in a control
environment.

Pete,

Have you tried the following form:

mailto:[url-encoded-email]?cc=[url-encoded-email]&subject=[url-encoded-subje
ct-line]

Essentially, after the mailto, separate the optional fields with a question
mark, then set their value with an equal to [=] and add additional fields
separated by an ampersand.

Re: [ADW] Problem loading site to web

Jack:

I'm confused by this sentence: "Dreamweaver is connecting to the server but the files
are not downloading to the website."

"Uploading" is when you FTP files to a server. "Download" is when you FTP files to a computer from the server.

Assuming you cannot put the files to the server, try checking the file permissions of the .statspasswd file online.

Connect to your site and click on the last icon on the right in the side panel under "Files". When you get the full-screen mode for the FTP aspects of DW, right-click on the file .statspasswd in the left panel. Go down to "Set Permissions..." and see what you have up there. Try setting permissions on that file for 644 for now.

If all else fails and I'm completely off-base, try here:

Hello,

I have a website at jackstratton. com. I had put up a temporary site
using SiteStudio software. I am now trying to overwrite with
Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver is connecting to the server but the files
are not downloading to the website.

DREAMWEAVER IS GIVING THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE:

.statspasswd - error occurred - An FTP error occurred - cannot
put .statspasswd. Access denied. The file may not exist, or there
could be a permission problem. Make sure you have proper
authorization on the server and the server is properly configured.
index.html - Put operation successful

File activity incomplete. 1 file(s) or folder(s) were not completed.
Files updated: 1

Files with errors: 1
.statspasswd

MY WEBSITE HAS THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE:

Error 403: Forbidden
You don't have permissions to access this page. This usually means
one of the following:

this file and directory permissions make them unavailable from the
Internet.
.htaccess contains instructions that prevent public access to this
file or directory.
Please check file and directory permissions and .htaccess
configuration if you are able to do this. Otherwise, request your
webmaster to grant you access.

Could the previous SiteStudo installation be forbidding access to the
site by Dreamweaver? If not, any advice on what's causing the
statspasswd error ?

Thanks.

Jack

Re: [ADW] Link from Flash Image

Its not the embed tag that causes the problem. Its the javascript that
places the object that CS3 uses that doesn't pass.

You can modify the javascript like Rob mentions or you can use SWFObject.

SwfObject does pass validation but unfortunately the javascript code that
CS3 uses, doesn't pass.

In the 2nd paragraph, it explains how it validates:

Re: [ADW] Link from Flash Image

I'm using CS3. When I start Dreamweaver, there is a security message
in the splash screen. However, when I select that download (mac), the
link is invalid.

I've reported this to Adobe, but wonder if there is a workaround -
that will solve the embed problem.

knows how it proves it by correcting the GoLIve error. Now to make it

Nope, no IE hacks. (I only use Virtual PC '07) for multiple IE testing.

The problem was related to a <base href="_top"> tag in the head of the
document. Once I commented it out, the problem resolved.

I was goofing around with the page and forgot about that tag. The was
incorrect anyway, it should have been <base target="_top">, not the href
attribute.

Valid code! Not correct code!

Two questions.

1. Is there a way to create a hyperlink from an embedded flash file/
movie?

2. I add a flash movie to my page by using Insert > Media > Flash.

Then when I validate the page, I get an error that I should not use
"embed". (automatically entered by DW).

Is there a better way to insert flash files?

I've got a peculiar problem with a web site page and I've been hitting
myself in the head with bricks trying to figure out the problem.

Here's the page...
http://www.pmiregion5.org/home.php

In Firefox 2 (Win), Safari 2 (OS X), and Firefox 2 (OS X) page loads just
fine.

In IE7 (Win) the images are not loading properly. Page spins for a while,
then times outs, loading only text and image placeholders. Images never come
in.

I've double checked the images. They are all 8-bit RGB JPEGs.

Up until a week ago page loaded just fine. The other day I replaced the last
image on the page "Nlewis2008.jpg". Ever since then, the page has acted
wonky, but in IE Win only.

Page validates okay for XHTML and CSS.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

RE: [ADW] problem w/ page in IE

Nevermind... found the problem... there was a <base> element in page head
that was throwing IE into a tail spin.

Subject: [ADW] problem w/ page in IE

Hi all,

Thoughts? Suggestions?

...Rob

[ADW] Link from Flash Image

It's me again.

Thanks !!!!

David

RE: [ADW] Converting from Yahoo Sitebuilder

I'd rebuild it in Dreamweaver saving only the content. Salvaging a
sitebuilder site is usually more trouble than it is worth.

Hi Guys,
I'm a Newbie here who has been given a Yahoo Sitebuilder site to work
with.

However, it gets pretty messy when I open it in DW?

If you're not familiar w/ YSB, when opening a page outside of YSB, it
displays a screen that says something like "This was not intended to be
modified outside of YSB".

Any thoughts how to convert or fix?

RE: [ADW] Converting from Yahoo Sitebuilder

Oh dude. If the site is not that complex, I'd recommend scrapping the site
builder pages and simply porting the whole thing. SiteBuilder is an awesome
tool provided that you stay within Yahoo (or whomever else has a flavor) and
use it to maintain the site.

Re: [ADW] Font question - was: Yet another newbie question....

If you want to do it in CSS for starters apply what your looking for
only to the table cell ie<td>

<td width="653" class="textareaHeader"><p>press</p></td>

I'm really not sure where you want this but I would have probably put
it in the center, which it actually defaults to when you remove the
text positioning attributes in your CSS. It is actually inheriting
these properties from the parent table or body most likely. These
attributes will control alignment in a table cell though. Bear in mind
though that while vertical-align does work in a table, it does not
inside just a <div> tag ie table less layout. There you usually have
to add padding to the div to control vertical text position. This
could also have been done in DW properties inspector under "horiz" and
"vert". It would have written the code inline with the table cells
code. The catch here though if I remember correctly is the vertical
align attribute does not validate anymore when used inline. In the CSS
code externally or in header I believe it's ok though.

.textareaHeader { text-align: center; vertical-align: middle; }

[ADW] XML Export Customization

I am using the Export Recordset as XML from the developer toolbox. I have it working great but I need to be able to add attributes to the RowNode during the export that includes a column from the XML Export. Currently it looks like this:

$xmlExportObj->addColumn("address", "address");

$xmlExportObj->setRowNode("location");

which produces this:

<location>

<address>8086 Queen Palm Ln #315 Radford, VA 22186-6443</address>

I need the xml to look like this:

<location address="701 first street, Sunnyvale, CA">

How do I do this?

Re: [ADW] Font question - was: Yet another newbie question....

In general Rob and Gary are right, but it does depend somewhat on just
how particular the client is. Also the same font can look totally
different from a Mac and a PC. There are actually many variations of
the same font sometimes. Usually they are pretty similar to all but
the most picky eye. There are techniques sometimes used to put an
imaged text in the background and then put the text over top of it.
CSS is then used to give it a negative indent like "-3000" under the
text indent property. Then the property for overflow is given a hidden
attribute. Screen-readers and search engine spiders can still see the
text, but the viewer only sees the image text. As long as there is not
a link on the text I'm ok with this, but with a link things get weird
and I haven't mastered that yet.

At the risk of being greedy with my questions, I'm posting a webpage

The files will be there by the time this message gets posted. All

Re: [ADW] Font question - was: Yet another newbie question....

It's better to use a common font (Bookman isn't on my computer) than
graphics because graphics can't be indexed by search engines or read by
screen readers. You can use Bookman, but also list alternate, common web
fonts so they can be substituted for everyone else who doesn't have Bookman.
Or try the sIRF route.

Thanks all. I realized after I sent the question that I could be
buying big trouble going across platforms and browsers.

That being said, and the client is slightly insistent, is it better to
use a common font (eg Bookman) or is it better to make a graphic that
contains the text?

Thanks again.

Re: [ADW] Yet another newbie question....

> Is it possible to insert special fonts into a stylesheet? For example
> Bookman or Caslon?

Generally, no. In CSS, you are limited by the fonts the visitor has
installed on his/her computer, though you can specify which font your
visitor's computer will try next. For example, if you say:

h1 {
font-family: Caslon, Arial, sans-serif;
}

all h1 headlines in your page will display in Caslon if your visitor
has that font. If not, then it will display in Arial, and if the
visitor does not have Arial, it will display in your visitor's default
sans-serif font.

CSS3 has functionality for linking to custom font files, but it is not
widely supported yet (and won't be for a while, considering CSS2.1
isn't even standardized yet). Also, Internet Explorer can read from
custom font files if you use invalid code, but in other browsers it
causes a file download, and even in IE, it installs the font locally,
which is a security concern.

However, if you're serious about a particular font, you can use sIFR
<http://wiki.novemberborn.net/sifr3>. It's not NEARLY as easy to use
as they claim, and you will need to have Flash Pro (8 or newer)
installed to generate the sIFR file that you upload to the Web. That
said, it is free, versatile, cross-browser, valid, semantic, and
scalable, and once you get it working, it is a thing of beauty.
Troubleshooting is a big pain in the neck, but that's what forums are
for.

Yes but it will only show up if the visitor has the font installed on their
computer. Make sure you include more common options. Font-family: Bookman,
Caslon, "Times New Roman", serif;

There shouldn't be since contribute uses a web browser and Adobe is pretty
good about cross platform support.

Re: [ADW] Styling the Insertion Point

Rob:

No deal. I'm lost.

And, for some reason, when I "Tab" between fields, the insertion point does not jump in the order of the fields.

I think I'm going to make these a lighter shade of blue and be done with it. Good ideas for a time....

Gary,

What happens if you set your BODY element to a dark colored background.
Perhaps the I-bar color/contrast is set based on the colors at that level.

Here's an example of a form that I did. You can see that the I-bar shows in
white.

[ADW] Styling the Insertion Point

How do I style the insertion point -- the blinking pipe | -- where the next letter will be inserted? I'm working with a dark background for a form and need this to be white.

I can't find the right tag name at the W3C.

That's because in addition to NOTES, Dreamweaver uses those folders for
caching file synchronization information (in the "dwsync.xml").

RE: [ADW] CS3 DW creates default "notes" folder, where to turn that off?

You can turn them off in Dreamweaver CS 3 launch the site settings for the
site you want to turn them off on and go to the Advanced tab, then select
Design Notes from the left column. Remove the checkmark from "Maintain
Design Notes". That should remove them or at least keep them from recreating
if you delete them.

However, I would recommend keeping them since information on links, etc. is
stored there.

Re: [ADW] Removing Pictures for Flash Slideshow

Thanks, for your input. It is always nice to confirm what one has learned.

The watermark helps; as does proper size reduction. The average
computer user doesn't really know how to strip out a flash file and most
don't know how to even do a screen capture. I think we'll never be able
to protect our photos from those that are tech savvy and are
specifically out to steal photos for their own gain.

RE: [ADW] need help converting & embedding audio files

Web Audio Plus will do what you're looking for:
http://www.designerwiz.com/Web-Audio-Plus/web-audio-plus.html

It's licensable so you'll find it under some different names under different
websites. I've used it on some of my sites:
http://www.janesvoice.net/demos.html

You select audio, and then some basic controls/config, and then it outputs a
fully functional SWF file that you simply drop into your code. very easy
and highly recommended.

Subject: [ADW] need help converting & embedding audio files

I'm new here so if this is a recent topic please forgive me. I didn't
see anything in the archives.

I have potential new client. She wants updates to her website
(I'm good there) BUT she has some audio recordings from her radio show
that she needs converted to MP3 and posted on her web site for all to
listen. No password protection, no purchase so that makes it easier.
Can someone point me to a tutorial or give me some info on how this is
done in DW8? I see all kinds of Flash things to insert under the Insert
Menu but nothing about audio. Also, what do I need to convert the file
and is an MP3 the best format? I did see some issues in previous
postings about a dialog box coming up.

Any help is appreciated!
Monica

[ADW] OT Recommendation wanted for property management software

Hello Everyone!

This is a bit off topic but I thought this would be a good place to ask
for advice. I have a potetial customer who would like to offer rental
properties online. They want some sort of off the shelf package that
will allow them to easily enter the properties themselves and that
offers a search feature on price range, size of propertie, location etc.

Does anyone know of any off the shelf packages that can be incorporated
in to a website designed within dreamweaver? I have done a web search
on such packages and didn't come up with anything that really stood out
to me, so I would really appreciate anyones experience in this type of
package.

Regards,

Clare Green.

Re: [ADW] New site - Templates not recognized

Thanks. The sites were defined properly.

I was especially concerned when I changed one of the templates and nothing happened to the original file (changed, "Home" to "Homer" in navigation).

What I had to do was delete the site and then add it again. When I initially added the site and downloaded the files, DW didn't process anything or any relationship between any of the files. When I deleted the site and then added it again with the files already on my hard drive, DW read all the files, noted the proper relationships between them, and added the templates.

[ADW] New site - Templates not recognized

I picked up a new client with an existing Web site. The site was constructed with Dreamweaver, and includes a /Templates/ folder with a few versions of the base template, including the on that is linked to all pages on the site.

When I go to add a new page, however, this site shows no templates. How can I get my DW8 to recognize the templates in this site?

[ADW] beware "Mark of the Web"

Hi all,

I just learned a very hard lesson this evening... the "Mark of the Web" is
not the panacea for running HTML-based content locally. We just completed a
project, fairly straightforward one, that was a CD-ROM that included HTML
content with links between pages and also to PDF files. Well guess what?
Links to PDF files DO NOT WORK if you include "Mark of the Web" on your
pages in IE6/7. Why? I don't know. But I do know that I've got a very
expensive "make good" situation on my hands!

We routinely use "Mark of the Web" for HTML-based CD-ROM projects. We've
done this to avoid the hand holding, and uncertainty, that comes with having
an end user adjust their "run Active Content from CD" settings on IE. The
Mark of the Web has always allowed us to work around this issue. Until now
that it.

The Mark of the Web works if the links are to named anchors and *.htm/*.html
files. It does not like *.pdf!

Here's a very basic sample code...

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<!-- saved from url=(0014)about:internet -->
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<title>simple pdf test</title>
</head>
<body>
<p>This is a <a href="sample.pdf" target="_self">link to a PDF file</a> at
the same level as this page.</p>
</body>
</html>

Create a new blank page and save it locally. Then copy a PDF file to the
same directory and rename it as "sample.pdf". Test the XHTML file in IE.
Click on the link. What happens? In my case, and all test bed PCs I've tried
in my office, the link is silently ignored.

Next, edit the XHTML file by removing the Mark of the Web line that is
between the DOCTYPE and the opening <html> element. Test again. It works!

Lesson learned!

Thought I'd share this one with you, so that you can benefit from my School
O' Hard Knocks education.

...Rob
